Sorry, guys, but I cannot find Six News on the new website. As a UKSMG member (and logged in as such at the moment) I should be able to download it ...

Hi Enno, on the tabs at the top of the page go to Members Only then 'Six News Downloads', you will find it there.

Hi All, just a few more notes to outline what we have done with the site since yesterday. In line with the policy on our previous site, we have tried to allow access to as much information as possible to the casual browser consistent with protecting the items available to UKSMG members only. It is now possible to visit the site as an anonymous user and view virtually everything available to those actually registered and logged in, the difference is that these users will be unable to add value to the site by posting announcements, adding to the forums or using the sked facility. The only real difference is the way the announcements can be viewed. Due to limitations in the site software, it is only possible to read the Announcement Pages by viewing the 'Latest Announcements' pane on the left side of the Home Page. Logged in users have no such restriction. We are working on this but again, its likely to be one for the future rather than 'tomorrow'.

The parameters we are using to determine access levels are as follows:

That 'anyone' can browse the site without logging in or registering
although they will not have access to any of the members areas and
will have read only access everywhere else.

Those who have registered and logged in will be the same as above but
will be able to post on the Announcement Pages and Forums.

Those who have registered, logged in and are UKSMG Members will be
able to do all of the above plus have access to the members only areas.

We feel this is about right and will hopefully encourage users not only to register and log in, but also to become Full UKSMG Members in due course.

Another busy day for Dave and me on the site. You may have noticed a few layout changes, particularly in the right hand pane. By user request, the Latest Forum Posts have been amended slightly to include the subject heading; further requested changes here were not as simple and will possibly be incorporated at a later date. The running order of items in this pane has also been altered to promote PMs to the top followed by Forum Posts etc.

The Welcome text has been altered to match the changed access levels.

Some changes have been made to the way items such as the [UKSMG] [Archives] are displayed. These used to open in the central area of the site but this did not provide the best viewing platform. These have been changed to open in a separate window and I expect more instances of this to follow in due course. It will take a while as each individual file needs to have parameters set.

The Banner area at the top of the site is now being used to display UKSMG events and we expect this to be the normal use for this area. Details of the AGM will be posted here before long; I need to ensure the fine details of the arrangementsare correct before committing to the site.

Thats it for now, probably more later in the week.

Its over a week since I last gave an update so here it is. Dave has spent much of the last week or so in the USA but despite that has still managed to keep an eye on the site and to prevent me from doing too much damage in his absence : -) Major changes have slowed right down now and we have been concentrating on the quality of data provision rather than the look and feel of the site which is largely where we want it at present. Small changes are being made on a daily basis but you would be forgiven for not noticing as they largely affect areas of the site other than the main pages.

Changes in the pipeline include displaying much of our historic data (Six News articles etc) in full screen format rather than within the site window as at present. In fact, the intention is that all 'static' information on the site, that is the data that doesn't change regularly, will be displayed full screen. As I have mentioned previously, this will take a little time and will be fitted around other activities. We are also looking at providing a site map facility which will allow easy direct access to the site for those who prefer to use it.

Its nice to see that the forum area is being well used, in fact more well used than the Announcement Pages on some days. Whilst this largely reflects the current low activity levels on 6m (digital excepted) some credit must go to the higher levels of visibility given to the forums on the main site pages. Some interesting thoughts are being aired and points debated and I would commend them to you.

On a personal note I am currently trying to get to grips with the inner workings of the site. Dave has been extremely patient in answering my seemingly unending queries but I would like to be able to do more myself before his patience runs out. In essence, please bear with us during these early stages, our response times will improve as the steep learning curve starts to flatten out.

On some of the "New to Six?" pages the righthand column covers the main page text. Can this be sorted please?

If you go to the Home Page and click on New to Six? in the top menu you will see that the righthand part of text is hidden under the Latest Forum Posts. Click on any of the links under RU new to 6m? and you will see those pages also get hidden under the Latest Forum Post column.
