Post Announcement

Regarding the Vienna meeting proposals, the UKSMG committee have several reservations about this which we have put to G4ASR the original proposer. Whilst on the surface this may have some merit, we believe that the implications need to be studied more closely before such a momentous change is made. Once we have a response from David I will lay out our position on this in more detail. I have no doubt that there will be conflicting views amongst 6m operators but whichever way this pans out lets ensure that all the pros and cons are considered.

Or use something like Ham Radio Deluxe which makes scanning, band changing etc a breeze

The most limiting factor will be the natural laziness of operators with traditional knob-receivers. From 50.080 - 50.120 it was easy to check out 50.000 - 50.080 with quick tick of the finger, but it is quite a hike to crank all the way through 300 kHz up every so many minutes while operating... Therefore my proposal for a separate SDR-monitor (e.g. with 24" screen) for the dedicated 50 MHz operator --- 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA/NNoY ---

The RSGB beacon list below is very much outdated/incomplete. G3USF's list has been updated yesterday. Well, it does not matter much if all frequencies are going to be "lifted". This makes a nice project for a simple SDR receiver (e.g. Linrad/Winrad) monitoring 50.4 - 50.5 MHz for band openings and recording the whole slot onto a 1 TB disk for a "rehearsal" of the active periods --- 73, "Zaba" OH1ZAA/OHoMZA ---

Re: 6m beacon new bandplan above 50.4MHz.
I'm ruther sceptical if the 400KHz higher beacon frequency shift will be a serious limiting factor concerning warning of earlier happening F2 DX openings...[dooh] 73

Thanks to Jose, EA7KW for pointing me in the direction of this announcement this evening, found here
http://data.dcc.rsgb.org/
"At an Interim C5 Meeting (Vienna, 02/2010) it was proposed that the 6M beacon band will be relocated to 50.4000 - 50.5000 MHz, with all beacons moved or closed down no later that 01/01/2013."
Sonner rather than later, yes please.

Thanks for all comments so far re silver plating. Most negative comments seem to be based on using poor quality silver / methods of plating - not the act of silver plating itself. I have the availability to use professional methods - washing, vacuum plating and Plasma glow cleaning. It seems that the benefit would be as long as the silver is oxidized. More as I get further into the possibilities. Thanks again for all comments.

Ken, 1st hit on Google, brought up the Amps reflector and a Topic/thread on silver plating tank coils. Ian GM3SEK sums it up best “I'd recommend using bare copper and keep the silver in your pocket.

QUESTION - is there any advantage in silver plating Coils and capacitor plates in 50 / 70 MHZ units? - if so - what depth of silver?
